Unstitching

by Ruby Shrimpton
18:30 on 21st Jan

An awkward woman stands on a stage because she wants to be seen, she wants to express herself authentically, but it’s a lot harder than she thought. She attempts spoken-word, cynical ranting and Eurovision choreography but she’s getting caught up in her own words and her show is literally beginning to unravel around her.

Made up of yarn and lip-syncs, Unstitching is an existential comedy about self-expression and Eurovision.

RUBY SHRIMPTON

Writer and Performer

Ruby is an actor, writer, and theatre-maker based in Liverpool. While studying for her Masters at LIPA, she explored her interest in combining different forms of performance. The result of this was "Unstitching", a show that draws on lyrical poetry, stand-up comedy, metatheatrical work, and The Eurovision Song Contest. Ultimately Ruby aspires for her work to be truthful and playful. She is endorsed and supported by LIPA. She has previously worked with Alphabetti Theatre, Northern Stage, Shakespeare Speakeasy, Theatre Space NE, Growth House, and Altru Drama.

CREATOR'S NOTE

Eurovision is a massive part of my life and I've never quite understood why it has the impact on me that it does. In 2022 I started reflecting on the difference between high and low art, and what the point of art even is. And then I began thinking about my own relationship with art as an introvert, and why standing on a stage is much less scary than talking to people in real life. I'm not sure if Unstitching answers any of the questions I had. But I had a lot of fun exploring it all. Getting to create a show based on one of my favourite things (Eurovision), while asking big questions has been a total dream. I'm so thankful for all the help along the way.

Unstitching will next be performed:

17th February, The George Harrison Studio, LIPA

22nd-24th May, The Actors, Brighton (as part of Brighton Fringe)
