Songs of Innocence

by Louis Gale

Created by Stormy Teacup Productions

After a chance meeting one long, golden summer’s day, five young lives entangle on the evening of the Village Dance; a night of that should be the making of their young lives. A village like any other, a night unimaginable...

Life in the village has scarce changed for centuries, but lives are irrevocably changed one summer’s day after the chance encounter of five young people in a wooded clearing. As each one comes of age and passes the uniquely separate but painfully recognisable thresholds of youth, all comes to a head on the evening of the Village Dance; a night that should be the making of their young lives. But although just an ordinary village, this is no ordinary summer’s night...

The play is a classic tale of rural life, innocence and its loss; with heart melting music, a warm comedic atmosphere and a dark and shockingly political twist.

This show was presented as part of SIX PLAYS ONE DAY at the Tristan Bates Theatre on 8th February 2020.

Author's note.

SONGS OF INNOCENCE at its heart is a coming of age tale set against the backdrop of rural life, a time of innocence, and passing the painfully relatable thresholds of youth in the Edwardian countryside with heart-melting music and a warm comedic atmosphere. We very much believe in the idea that if you want to share a message with a play, the last thing you should do is make the play about the message. The play features normal people living normal lives, caught up in everything that seems so important to them in that moment, just as we are, whilst not knowing of or ignoring the seemingly far away issues. And then being the ones to suffer the consequences when those issues come home. The play explores class, sexuality and gender as well as the dangers of factionalism and political separatism, an ever-important topic especially in our post-Brexit world, in a way that is accessible, subversive and deeply relevant.
