WORKSHOP BREAKDOWN

• We start with a game or two, including a miming game called ‘Pass the Object’.

• We then chat about our pets, if we have any, and any funny stories about them.

• Stephen shows the class a short and comedic invisible dog routine.

• Then we learn how to mime walking an invisible dog, a step by step process.

• Then a task: working in small groups, we create a short sketch with no dialogue involving an invisible dog and/or other pets and objects.

• They work on them in groups for 5/10 minutes, then we show the rest of our sketches, one by one.

• The rest of the class then guess what exactly is happening in the sketch, and they can give feedback on how to make things clearer for the audience.

• If we have time, the groups can go up again and perform their sketch a second time, applying the feedback they received from the class from the first go.

• The session would end with a short Q&A with Stephen.

Created WITH THE EDINBURGH FRINGE SOCIETY

This workshop was developed at a variety of Edinburgh-based primary schools in 2020, after our theatre company was being awarded the 'Fringe In Schools' bursary from the Edinburgh Fringe Society.

We have since hosted the workshop dozens of times nationally and internationally, for participants of all ages, stages of learning, actors or not...

TESTIMONIALS:

"Stephen’s ‘Meet My Invisible Dog’ workshop was thoroughly enjoyed by all students (and staff) who participated. Stephen had lots of energy and enthusiasm which was motivating and encouraging for the learners, he got to know the students and spent time supporting all students during the workshop. His workshop was inclusive to all learners with different needs and abilities and he was able to differentiate the tasks so everyone could participate. Thank you Stephen and we hope to work with you again in the future."

- Grace Copperwhite | (ASN Learners) West Herts College, Watford

"He was engaging and enthusiastic with the children and built a great rapport with the class over a short amount of time. The high quality of drama taught provided an inclusive, fun yet challenging workshop, allowing all children to be involved. The ideas Stephen used have allowed me to implement them in my own teaching practice."

- Charlotte Bennett | Clovenstone Primary School, Edinburgh

"It was a pleasure welcoming Stephen (and his invisible dogs) to Woodlands School. He delivered a fantastic and engaging workshop to a small group, of our challenging learners, during our weekly IDL session (Interdisciplinary Learning). Pupils from the Expressive Art and Drama groups had the opportunity to create their own ‘Invisible Dog’ and communicate to others, using just their bodies and actions, how they would take it for a walk. Pupils had great fun and learnt new skills at the same time."

- Ann Russell | (ASN Learners) Woodlands Special School, Edinburgh

"Tremendous fun for everyone involved. The learners engaged well with the activities from the very start, and the whole canine theme soon captured everyone’s imaginations. The warm-up exercises were useful for introducing the group and some interesting dog stories were shared! I feel that the real strength of the session lay in the involvement of the participants at every stage; their creative ideas were taken seriously and skilfully guided into creating a performance at the end of the class. The young people (and staff!) learned some simple but effective techniques for mime from Stephen. The whole experience was entertaining, thought-provoking and unforgettable."

- Martin O’Gorman | (ASN Learners) Woodlands Special School, Edinburgh
